Philips Hue with SimHub
Last updated · SimHub 9.11.22
SimHub controls Philips Hue through entertainment mode, which has two consequences most people hit before they read anything. First, you need a Hue bridge — the Bluetooth-only mode that lets you drive a bulb straight from your phone is not enough, because entertainment mode is a bridge feature. Second, you must create and configure the entertainment area in the Hue mobile app before SimHub can use it; SimHub reads areas, it does not create them. Each entertainment area holds at most 12 lights. If SimHub shows no Hue areas at all, you are missing one of those two things, and it is almost always the entertainment area rather than the bridge.
Hue is the easiest of the smart-light options to get working and the easiest to misdiagnose, because the failure is silent: no areas listed, no error, nothing to search for.
Why entertainment mode, and what it changes
Normal Hue control is a request per bulb, over the network, at the pace a lighting app needs. Entertainment mode is a streaming mode built for exactly this kind of use — screen-synced lighting that changes many times a second — and it is why SimHub uses it rather than the ordinary API.
The cost is a setup step that has no equivalent on the other systems: an entertainment area is a named group of lights with positions, created in the Hue app. Until one exists, SimHub has nothing to list.
Where to create one. Hue app → Settings → Entertainment areas → add one, add your lights, place them on the room diagram. The positions matter: they are how SimHub knows which light is on your left.
The limits worth knowing before you plan
- 12 lights per entertainment area
- A hard ceiling. If you have more Hue lights than that in the room, they will not all be in one area, and SimHub works with the area rather than with your whole house.
- A bridge is required
- Entertainment mode is a bridge capability. Bulbs paired over Bluetooth alone cannot do it, whatever else they can do from the phone.
- The area is defined in the Hue app
- Including which lights are in it and where they sit. SimHub reads that configuration; changing your layout means editing the area in the Hue app, not in SimHub.
Buying advice hidden in the limits. If your plan is a light per corner of the rig plus a wash behind the screens, 12 is generous and Hue is a good fit. If the plan is a strip with fine positional detail — a spotter that shows where a car is rather than which side — Hue is the wrong tool and an Adalight strip is the right one.
SimHub lists no Hue areas
- Open the Hue app and confirm an entertainment area exists and has lights in it. This is the answer most of the time.
- Confirm the bridge is on the same network as the PC, and that the PC's network profile is Private rather than Public.
- Restart SimHub. Discovery runs at startup, so an area created while SimHub was open will not appear on its own.
- Press the physical button on the bridge if SimHub asks for it — the first connection is an explicit pairing, exactly like adding any other app.
If areas appear but the lights do nothing, check that no other app is streaming to the same entertainment area. Entertainment mode is exclusive while it is streaming, so a Hue Sync box or the Hue Sync desktop app holding the area will lock SimHub out of it — the same class of problem as Govee's exclusive control, in a different shape.
Common questions
Can I use Hue with SimHub without a bridge?
No. SimHub uses entertainment mode, and entertainment mode is a bridge feature. Bulbs paired over Bluetooth to your phone alone cannot stream, whatever else they can do.
SimHub shows no Hue entertainment areas. Why?
Almost always because no entertainment area exists yet. Create one in the Hue mobile app — Settings, Entertainment areas — add your lights, position them, then restart SimHub so discovery runs again.
How many Hue lights can I use?
Twelve per entertainment area. That is a Hue limit rather than a SimHub one, and it is generous for rig lighting but not for anything wanting fine spatial detail.
Why do my Hue lights work in Hue Sync but not SimHub?
Entertainment streaming is exclusive while it is running. If Hue Sync — the desktop app or the box — is holding the entertainment area, SimHub cannot stream to it. Stop the other one first.
Do the light positions in the Hue app matter?
Yes. The positions you set on the room diagram are how SimHub knows which light is on your left and which is behind you, so a flag or spotter effect lands on the right side of the room.
