SimHub with rFactor 2
Last updated · SimHub 9.11.22
rFactor 2 publishes telemetry through shared memory and SimHub reads it directly with nothing to enable inside the game. As with every shared-memory sim, administrator rights must match between the game and SimHub, because Windows will not let a normal process read an elevated one's memory — and it fails with no error at all. rFactor 2 provides one of the more detailed telemetry sets available, which makes it a good sim to tune haptics in.
The same engine underlies Le Mans Ultimate, so if you have one working the other will behave very similarly.
How it works
Shared memory, no in-game configuration. rFactor 2 publishes its telemetry structure whenever it runs and SimHub reads it.
Any number of applications can read shared memory at once, so SimHub coexists with CrewChief, a lap timer or anything else with no contention.
PC only, because shared memory is a local mechanism.
Setting it up
Enable rFactor 2 in SimHub
Tick it in the game list. This is the only required step in most cases.
Match administrator rights
If rFactor 2 or its launcher runs elevated, SimHub must too.
Go on track
Values appear immediately. Practice is enough.
rFactor 2 gotchas
- Administrator rights. The usual silent failure and the first thing to check.
- Mod content varies in quality. rFactor 2 has a substantial modding scene, and mod cars can report unusual or incorrect values — a rev limit that is wrong, or fuel that behaves oddly. That is the content rather than SimHub.
- The launcher is a separate process. If you launch through it and it is elevated, the game inherits that.
- Le Mans Ultimate shares the engine, so a working setup for one is a strong indication of what the other needs.
What works well here
rFactor 2's tyre and suspension modelling is among the most detailed available, and that detail reaches the telemetry. It is one of the best sims for bass shakers specifically — road texture, kerb strikes and grip-loss cues all have rich data behind them.
Because the content spans everything from historic single-seaters to modern prototypes, percentage-based shift lights are essential and per-car calibration is worth doing for whatever you drive regularly.
If you are building a haptics profile to use elsewhere, this is a good sim to build it in — the data is detailed enough that you are tuning against reality rather than against approximation.
Common questions
Do I need to enable anything in rFactor 2 for SimHub?
No. rFactor 2 publishes telemetry through shared memory whenever it runs, with no in-game setting. Ticking it in SimHub's game list is the only step.
Why does SimHub show no telemetry in rFactor 2?
Almost certainly an administrator-rights mismatch. If rFactor 2 or its launcher runs elevated, SimHub must too — Windows will not let a normal process read an elevated one's memory, and it fails with no error at all.
Can I run SimHub and CrewChief together with rFactor 2?
Yes, with no configuration. Shared memory can be read by any number of applications simultaneously. The one-at-a-time contention problem only affects UDP games like Forza and the F1 series.
Why does a mod car behave oddly in SimHub?
rFactor 2 has a large modding scene and mod content varies in quality — an incorrect rev limit or unusual fuel behaviour is the content rather than SimHub. Percentage-based shift light configuration adapts to whatever a car reports and is the right choice here.
Is Le Mans Ultimate the same setup?
Very nearly. LMU is built on the rFactor 2 engine and inherits its shared-memory telemetry, so a working configuration for one tells you what the other needs.
Is rFactor 2 good for bass shakers?
One of the best. Its tyre and suspension modelling is unusually detailed and that detail reaches the telemetry, so road texture, kerb strikes and grip-loss effects have rich data behind them rather than approximations.
