SimHub with Dirt Rally 2.0

Last updated · SimHub 9.11.22

Dirt Rally 2.0 broadcasts telemetry over UDP and is PC only on SimHub's supported list. Enable UDP telemetry in the game's hardware settings file, point it at 127.0.0.1, and tick the game in SimHub. There is one known SimHub-side issue: a missing CodemastersDirtRally2.CarNames.csv data file, which means car names may not resolve. It affects labelling rather than telemetry, so everything functional still works.

Dirt Rally 2.0's telemetry is enabled through a configuration file rather than an in-game menu, which is the main thing that catches people.

How it works

UDP broadcast, Codemasters style. The distinguishing feature is that it is configured in a file rather than through the game's options screen.

PC only on the supported list. Only one application can receive the stream.

Setting it up

  1. Find the hardware settings file

Dirt Rally 2.0's UDP telemetry is enabled in a configuration file in the game's documents folder rather than in an options menu. This is the step people look for in the wrong place.

  2. Enable UDP and set the destination

Set the UDP option on and the destination to 127.0.0.1 with a port matching SimHub.

  3. Restart the game

The file is read at startup.

  4. Enable Dirt Rally 2.0 in SimHub and open the firewall

    Both Private and Public profiles.

Dirt Rally 2.0 gotchas

Known issue: a missing car names data file. SimHub has a documented problem with a missing CodemastersDirtRally2.CarNames.csv, which means car names may not resolve properly. This affects labelling — what the car is called on a dashboard — rather than telemetry itself, so speed, RPM, gear and every effect continue to work normally. Worth knowing so you do not go looking for a configuration fault that is not yours.

What works well here

Everything said about rally on the EA Sports WRC page applies: a dashboard built for circuit racing wastes most of its space, surface haptics are primary information rather than background, and shift lights matter less than they do on a circuit.

Dirt Rally 2.0 specifically is regarded as having some of the best surface modelling in rally games, which makes it a good sim to tune road texture and grip-loss effects against. If you are building a rally haptics profile, this is a good place to build it.

The car range spans historic rally cars through to modern Rally2 machinery with very different rev characteristics, so percentage-based shift lights are the right choice if you configure them at all.

Common questions

How do I enable telemetry in Dirt Rally 2.0?

Through a hardware settings configuration file in the game's documents folder rather than an in-game options menu — which is why people cannot find the setting. Enable UDP, set the destination to 127.0.0.1 with a port matching SimHub, and restart the game so the file is re-read.

What is the CodemastersDirtRally2.CarNames.csv issue?

A known missing data file on SimHub's side, which means car names may not resolve. It affects labelling rather than telemetry, so speed, RPM, gear and every effect still work — it is worth knowing so you do not hunt for a configuration fault that is not yours.

Does SimHub work with Dirt Rally 2.0 on console?

It is marked PC only on SimHub's supported games list.

Why is my SimHub dashboard mostly empty in Dirt Rally 2.0?

It was likely built for circuit racing. Rally has no lap time, no position and no gap to the car ahead, so those fields never populate. Use a rally-oriented dashboard: stage time, split, distance remaining and gear.

Is Dirt Rally 2.0 good for bass shakers?

Yes — it has some of the best surface modelling in rally games, which makes it a good sim to tune road texture and grip-loss effects against. If you are building a rally haptics profile, build it here.

Do I need per-car shift light settings?

Use percentage rather than absolute RPM. The car range spans historic rally cars to modern Rally2 machinery with very different rev characteristics, so an absolute setting would be wrong for most of the field.
