SimHub with Project Cars 2

Last updated · SimHub 9.11.22

Project Cars 2 broadcasts telemetry over UDP and supports both PC and consoles. Enable UDP telemetry in the game's options, set the protocol version SimHub expects, and tick the game in SimHub. If values arrive but look wrong, the protocol version is the cause rather than the connection. As with Automobilista 2, which shares the same engine, overlays need a Steam launch parameter to force borderless windowed mode.

Project Cars 2 and Automobilista 2 are configured nearly identically, because both are built on the Madness engine and share its telemetry system.

How it works

UDP broadcast. The game sends telemetry packets to a configured address and port, and SimHub listens for them.

Because it is UDP, it works from consoles — the packets travel over your network to a PC running SimHub — and only one application can receive the stream.

Project Cars (the first one) is PC only on SimHub's supported list; Project Cars 2 is marked PC and consoles.

Setting it up

  1. Enable UDP telemetry in the game

In Project Cars 2's options. Off by default.

  2. Set the protocol version

The setting that decides whether the numbers make sense. A mismatch gives you values that arrive and are wrong.

  3. Set the destination

127.0.0.1 on the same PC, or your PC's IP address if you are playing on a console.

  4. Enable it in SimHub and open the firewall

Tick the game, and allow SimHub on both Private and Public profiles.

  5. For overlays, force borderless windowed

Via a Steam launch parameter. Overlays cannot draw over an exclusive-fullscreen game.

Project Cars 2 gotchas

What works well here

Project Cars 2 covers a broad range — road cars, GT, prototypes, historic and karts — so percentage-based shift lights are the right choice and per-car calibration is worth doing for regular cars.

Its weather and surface simulation is one of its distinguishing features, which makes road-surface and grip-loss haptics unusually rewarding: a wet track feels different through the shakers if the effects are tuned to reflect it.

For console players, the practical dashboard is a phone — nothing to buy, and nothing overlaid on the television, which is not possible anyway.

Common questions

Does SimHub work with Project Cars 2 on console?

Yes. Project Cars 2 is listed as PC and consoles because it broadcasts telemetry over UDP, which travels over your network to a PC running SimHub. Set the telemetry destination to your PC's IP address and make sure the PC's network profile is Private.

SimHub receives Project Cars 2 data but it is wrong.

A UDP protocol version mismatch. The game offers more than one version and the wrong one produces values that arrive and are incorrect. Receiving nothing points at the connection; receiving nonsense points at the protocol setting.

Why can't I see my SimHub overlay in Project Cars 2?

The game is in exclusive fullscreen, and an overlay is a transparent window drawn on top — nothing can be drawn on top of an exclusive-fullscreen game. Use the Steam launch parameter that forces borderless windowed mode.

Is Project Cars 1 supported?

Yes, but PC only, whereas Project Cars 2 is listed for PC and consoles. Project Cars 3 is a separate entry on the supported list.

Is Automobilista 2 set up the same way?

Almost identically. Both run on the Madness engine and share its UDP telemetry system, including the protocol version setting and the borderless launch parameter needed for overlays.

What haptics work well in Project Cars 2?

Road surface and grip loss especially, because the weather and surface simulation is one of the game's stronger features — a wet track feels different through shakers when the effects are tuned for it.
